Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease (also known as an autoimmune disease) which mainly affects the joints. This disease occurs when the body’s immune system, (the body’s natural defence system), mistakenly starts to attack the synovium; the soft tissue membrane that lines the joint. This can result in joint pain, joint damage, inflammation, loss of function and even disability.
The joints most commonly affected by this are those of the hands, wrists, feet, ankles, knees and elbows. The joints will often be affected symmetrically. This means that if one joint is affected the same joint on the other side will be affected also, e.g. knees or wrists.
This disease does not only affect joints, it can also affect many organs including the skin, the heart and the lungs.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can be controlled (to a degree) through diet and exercise. By developing the muscles around the joints you will provide additional support to the joints. Whichever exercise you choose to do, make sure you warm up properly. If you find an exercise or activity causes soreness and swelling, stop and rest. If there does not appear to be signs of aggravation you should be ok to continue.
Recommended nutritional changes should be made to control some symptoms. These include:
